The National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
K-12 FASD Education & Prevention Curriculum

NOFAS is pleased to introduce a comprehensive school-based Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Education and Prevention curriculum for grades K-12. The curriculum provides age-appropriate information about the consequences that alcohol can have on human development while simultaneously encouraging youth to be tolerant and accepting of all individuals regardless of one’s individual capabilities or disabilities. These unique 30-45 minute units offer teachers the opportunity to easily integrate information on FASD and disabilities into a standard curriculum. Units can be purchased individually or as a K-12 package.

Kindergarten through Second Grade                                                                    $25
Incorporates a storybook into the lesson that encourages students to be understanding and accepting of others’ abilities and disabilities. Unit includes a storybook, lesson plan, and a cd-rom with teacher background information.

Third through Fifth Grade                                                                                    $25
Presents a healthy lifestyle model that teaches students to distinguish harmful substances from healthy substances while incorporating the dangers that alcohol can have on a body. The lesson emphasizes the dangers alcohol can have on a pregnant woman’s unborn child through a brief introduction to FASD. Unit includes the lesson plan and a cd-rom containing teacher background information and activity sheets.

Sixth through Eighth Grade                                                                              $85
Shifts from the foundation building of the K-2 and 3-5 to an anatomical approach with an emphasis on the physical affects that alcohol has on the brain. This is demonstrated through the use of a 3-D brain model that compares an alcohol-affected brain hemisphere to an unaffected hemisphere. Unit includes the lesson plan, 3-D brain model, and a cd-rom with teacher background information and activity sheets.

Ninth through Twelfth Grade                                                                         $35
Decision-making skills are crucial at this stage in life. This unit incorporates excerpts from the popular television show Law & Order: SVU to engage students in a decision-making skills discussion related to alcohol use and pregnancy. The lesson presents students with information on FASD and the importance of avoiding all alcohol during pregnancy. Unit includes the lesson plan, the Law & Order:SVU excerpts, and a cd-rom with teacher background information and activity sheets. (please specify DVD or VHS when ordering)
