“I am afraid that waiting for students with FASD to fail is all too common. It is tragic to hear that school teachers and administrators who are there to help support students let these students repeatedly fail in order for them to be eligible for intervention and special services.”

Addiction Advocate and Presidential Advisor Mike Deaver Dies at 69

Michael K. Deaver a well-known addiction advocate and former advisor to President Ronald Reagan died August 18th, 2007 of pancreatic cancer.  Deaver served as a member of the NOFAS Board of Directors for twelve years and was honored for his distinguished advocacy for FASD and alcohol-related issues at the 2007 NOFAS Leadership Awards Benefit in June.

He was the Vice Chairman for Edelman’s Washington, D.C. office, the world’s largest independent public relations firm.  With more than 30 years experience in presidential politics and communications, Deaver was widely recognized as one of the nation’s premier image-makers.

At Edelman, Deaver provided strategic counsel to some of the agency’s most prestigious accounts (including AT&T, Wal-Mart, API, Pharma, Microsoft and Nissan), helping clients deal with the elite media and other Beltway audiences.

Deaver spent more than 20 years as one of Ronald Reagan’s closest advisors in both Sacramento and Washington and was widely credited as the architect of the Reagan communications program, including the landslide presidential campaigns of 1980 and 1984.  He remained active in national and international politics, informally advising Republicans at all levels.  He was also the New York Times bestselling author of A Different Drummer: Thirty Years with Ronald Reagan (HarperCollins, 2001) and Nancy (HarperCollins, 2004).

Deaver was active in numerous charitable endeavors, including serving as co-founder, patron and current Chairman of Clean & Sober Streets, a free, 100 bed alcohol and drug rehabilitation residential program for homeless men and women in Washington, D.C.  Deaver also served as a board member of Father Martin’s Ashley, the nation’s premier drug treatment program, and on the boards of National Legal Action Center, the Legal Foundation of New York City and NOFAS.

Michael Deaver will be greatly missed.  His contributions to the NOFAS community will be forever remembered.
